IN JAPAN:
OUR
SILVER FIR
BOARDS.

Made from Black Forest silver fir, coveted in Japan: death board (Japanese: toba)

Death boards play an important role in Japanese Buddhism. Monks paint and inscribe them with wishes for the deceased. Similar to flower arrangements in Germany, the inscribed boards are placed on the graves once a year to commemorate the deceased.

The blanks for these death boards are produced at our Echtle sawmill in Nordrach. The quality requirements for these products are very high.

The goods must be KNOT-FREE, FLAWLESS, WITHOUT DISTORTION, STRAIGHT, FINE-YEARED. In other words, from the best that silver fir has to offer. The death boards are produced in three quality levels: A, B and C and in four different lengths: 0.93 m / 1.23 m / 1.53 m and 1.83 m. We produce around 2,000,000 death boards every year.

Fish boards
The fish boards are also exported semi-finished to Japan before they are made into the final product there. We generally supply the fish planks in lengths of 2.50 metres and in thicknesses of 44 – 55 mm.

The fish mash is packed on the fir wood, as the wood’s ingredients mean that it keeps for a few days longer.

Echtle is involved in the association for the sustainable promotion and conservation of silver fir. Find out more at www.weisstanne.info
