WITH WOOD
RESIDUES
SAVE CO2.

Energy for 1,000 single-family homes.

A sawmill produces many sawmill by-products in the form of bark, wood chips, wood shavings and sawdust. We use the bark to generate electricity and heat in our own power plant.

For technology enthusiasts, here are a few details: our wood-fired combustion plant with a thermal output of approx. 5.0 megawatts and a downstream ORC process generates approx. 0.9 MW of electrical energy, which is fed into the public grid, and 3.8 MW of thermal energy in the form of 80°C hot water.

This means that we generate enough heat to supply around 1,000 single-family homes, saving around 2,500,000 litres of heating oil. This saves around 9,000 tonnes of CO2.

The electricity generated also ensures a positive outcome:

The 7,000 MW of electricity is equivalent to the consumption of around 1,800 single-family homes. We ourselves also use the heat produced to operate our own drying kilns, in which sawn timber is dried.

In Nordrach, around 250 households, three rehabilitation clinics and the outdoor pool benefit from our heat thanks to the local heating network.

By generating renewable energy from wood processing residues, Echtle’s production is climate-neutral and makes a valuable contribution to the energy transition and environmental protection.

The Echtle power plant fulfils the ISO 50.001 standard, a sustainable energy management system.
